Dr Liezel Van Der Merwe

I am passionate about my patients and providing the best care including non-surgical/surgical treatment options. My areas of special interest include:
• Medical retina disease such as age-related macular degeneration, diabetic retinal disease and inherited retinal disorders
• Ocular inflammatory disease, such as uveitis
• Cataract and pterygium surgery
• Glaucoma

Scientific Research is critical in the above specialities and also a special interest of mine. I actively lead and participate in research studies and am the current co-chair of The Scientific and Medical Advisory Board to Retina South Africa.

Beyond my day-to day-work in the practice and academic research, I am dedicated to supporting other professionals working in the field of eye care and frequently offer training and mentorship.

Education and Training – I received my medical degree at the University of Stellenbosch. Following that, I trained in Ophthalmology at the University of the Witwatersrand Medical School, completing my practical training at St Johns Eye Hospital.

I live with my partner, Andre, in Pretoria, South Africa and love spending my free time travelling, scuba diving, enjoying South Africa’s amazing outdoors, cooking and playing golf.
