Dr Clayton Erasmus

After attaining his MBChB, Dr Erasmus worked as an intern at Port Shepstone Hospital. From there he had decided on Ophthalmology as a career and pursued a community service post in Kimberley in Ophthalmology and Plastic Surgery. He stayed on in the Northern Cape for 2 more years as a medical officer to participate in cataract outreach programmes to Upington, De Aar and Barkly West.

At the beginning of 2014 at St Johns Hospital, Soweto, Dr Erasmus started his specialist training under Professor’s Carmichael, McLaren and Mayet. He rotated through all ophthalmic sub-specialties including glaucoma, vitreoretinal, uveitis, paediatrics and strabismus, anterior segment and cataract, orbital and plastics as well as neuro-ophthalmology. During his time in the public sector, Dr Erasmus performed many successful eye surgeries for trauma related injuries.

Dr Erasmus obtained his specialist degree through the Fellowship of the College of Ophthalmologists of South Africa in 2017. During this time Dr Erasmus also obtained his Masters in Medicine in Neuro-ophthalmology by research report in 2017 through the University of Witwatersrand. 

During registrar training he offered his surgical expertise to the Bureau for the Prevention of Blindness and operated all over South Africa helping to restore the sight of hundreds of patients in need of cataract surgery in the community.

Dr Erasmus has a broad knowledge base in ophthalmology. He has performed thousands of successful cataract surgeries including premium intraocular lens implantation. He is also a keen laser refractive surgeon and performs laser corrective procedures on patients wanting to pursue a life of spectacle independence.
Dr Erasmus has also completed vitreo-retinal surgery training and has attended retinal courses in Bremen, Germany. He enjoys staying up to date with current knowledge by attending the annual European Retinal Society Meetings across Europe.
