Senior Ophthalmic Assistant

We are looking for an experienced Ophthalmic Assistant to join our team!

A position is available for a dynamic, enthusiastic, well presented individual with strong interpersonal
skills and a passion for people. As a member of the team, you would be responsible for developing good
patient relationships, while delivering high quality technical patient care and effective support to our
Ophthalmologists in the form of specialized testing and imaging.

Team members must be professional, dependable, exhibit excellent communication skills and be
motivated to excel. Must be capable of multitasking and be able to prioritize and juggle responsibilities
and be an efficient problem-solver. An Ophthalmic Assistant qualification (level 2) is essential.

Responsibilities include occasional traveling to other branches.

Extended operating hours may occasionally apply due to the nature of the medical environment and shift
work is incorporated; therefore, flexibility is essential.

QUALIFICATIONS & EXPERIENCE

Minimum Requirements

  • Grade 12 (Matric)
  • Ophthalmic Assistant Qualification Level 1 & 2
  • Minimum 3 years’ experience in an ophthalmic clinical setting
  • Proficient in OCT, biometry, topography, visual fields, and pre-testing
  • Computer literate

Advantageous

  • Practice management or supervisory experience highly beneficial
  • Basic Life Support or First Aid
  • Medical photography experience
  • Knowledge of medical terminology

Patient Care & Customer Service

  • Welcome and assist patients courteously, in person and telephonically.
  • Ensure patients are comfortable, informed, and treated with empathy and confidentiality.
  • Communicate effectively with consulting rooms, theatre, wards, and support services.
  • Provide clear explanations of procedures and assist patients during testing or movement
    between areas.
  • Maintain a professional, caring, and patient-centred environment.

Specialised Examinations

  • Conduct specialised ophthalmic tests including OCT, topography, biometry, visual fields,
    Fundus photography and FA.
  • Ensure all tests are requested and documented accurately.
  • Deliver high-quality images, measurements, and reports to Ophthalmologists promptly.
  • Consult specialists where necessary and assist with procedures as directed.

Equipment & Stock Management

  • Maintain clean, functional diagnostic equipment.
  • Follow infection control protocols and safety standards.
  • Monitor and order medical and office stock as required.
  • Report faults and coordinate servicing or repairs with unit manager.

Administration & Office Support

  • Manage patient data entry and ensure request forms are correctly labelled and filed.
  • Answer calls and queries professionally.
  • Support doctors’ rooms with system-related (GoodX) issues and escalate to IT where needed.
  • Maintain an organised workspace and monitor stationery levels.

Training & Development

  • Support ongoing training of Ophthalmic Assistants, trainees and students.
  • Participate in induction and mentorship of new staff.
  • Assist in developing and maintaining training materials and competency assessments.
  • Keep records of all training sessions and staff competency levels.
  • Participate in ophthalmic awareness days and outreach programmes.
